The word “Liminal” means: “that space in-between where you are now and where you want to be in the future.”

Everyone goes through at least one major liminal time in their lives.

It’s a weird space.

It’s unsettled.

It’s uncomfortable.

Far too often, it’s downright painful.

In liminal times, you know you are not where you want to be and sometimes you don’t even know where you hope to end up.

Most of us crave stability. We crave the familiar. We long for things to be normal.

The last few years have been anything but stable. The world has been shaken up in a way that we have not seen in quite a while. It has been frustrating, disorienting, and hard.

But here’s the thing: this time, this liminal space, can spark our greatest growth.

We are now faced with a choice.

Sure, we can try to ignore the changes and seek to regain what we think we have lost. But, this attempt to maintain the status quo will almost certainly fail. Change is inevitable and the seeking the status quo will keep us stuck in the past.

Nonprofits that are on the front lines. They are the ones in the war zones, the under-invested communities – the liminal spaces of our world.

Our other option is embrace this strange new world and choose to walk forward with boldness and courage.

If you choose courage, we promise you that this will be deep and profound work. After all, this is where the real growth is.

If we are willing to let them, these liminal times can provide our biggest moments of growth and grace.
